Today was another big day for Apple. A couple of months ago Steve Jobs announced that their next big project was going to be the Mac App Store. It was going to be very similar to the iOS App Store, but instead of selling iOS apps, the Mac App Store was going to sell apps for the Mac. After being able to spend some time on the App Store, it looks really good and there are some great apps in there. Right now there are about 1000 free apps. Let me show you around.
The first thing you are going to want to do is update your Mac to the latest software (10.6.6). In order to do this, click on the Apple Logo in the top, left corner. Next, you are going to want to click on “Software Update.” This will check to see that you have the latest software. You should see that you will need to download the latest software on your Mac.
After you get the update, you will want to restart your computer. Once your computer is restarted, you should now see the Mac App Store logo in your dock.
When you first open up the Mac App Store, you will find that the layout is very similar to iTunes. On the front page, or as Apple calls it the “Featured” page. You will see the apps that Apple is highlighting, New and Noteworthy, Staff Favorites, and What’s Hot. You will also see a variety of apps interspersed between each section as well. This page is very similar to the front page on iTunes for iOS Apps.
As you go through the rest of the categories, you will see that there is a “Top Charts” category, which will show you what is tops in the Mac App Store. There is also a “Categories” section for all the different categories of apps. Then a tab for your “Purchased” apps and any “Updates” round out the other tabs in the Mac App Store.
When you are ready to buy an app, click on the specific app. And then you can click on “buy”. The app will then download to your computer and the app will be in the dock waiting for you to use.
There you go, that is pretty much the App Store in a nutshell. There are some great apps out there. Apple has also put out some of their apps like iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband, and instead of selling them as a bundle, you can now purchase them individually. This is a nice option as I wouldn’t want to buy the whole bundle being that I don’t plan to use all the apps, but would really love to get the new iPhoto. Stay tuned for more posts on the Mac App Store and have fun downloading apps.
