The dictionary on Mac OSX is a feature that is usually overlooked. I will admit that I never really used it that much until I started blogging. Now I use it all the time. And I have learned some cool, but easy tricks for the dictionary that have come in very handy for me. Let me share them with you.
1. The Dictionary Widget
I’ll be honest, I am not the hugest fan of widgets for the Mac, but there are some very useful ones out there. In this case, there is a dictionary widget that is very helpful. If you don’t already have the widget, click on the + button in the lower left corner and a group of widgets will show up on the bottom of your screen. Find the dictionary widget, then drag it onto your screen. The widget is pretty self explanatory. You can type in a word in the box and then it will find the definition for you. You also have access to a thesaurus from the drop down menu in the widget as well.
Another easy way to find the definition of a word is to type it into the Spotlight. For every word that you type in there, you will see a definition for it. Click on the definition and it will expand to show you the whole definition.
3. Shortcut Key for Mail and Safari
In Apple Mail and Safari, you can look up words in sites you are surfing or in emails that you are getting. All you have to do is highlight the word and press Command, Control, D. This will then bring up a pop-up box for the word with the definition of the word. You can also choose to use the thesaurus as well. I wish this shortcut would work in other areas as I don’t use Mail and Safari a whole lot. But to those who do use this, this is a great shortcut to know.
4. Listening to how a word sounds
For whatever reason, you may want to hear how a word actually sounds. You can again do this in only Mail and Safari. Right click on a word, then you will see a menu. Scroll down till you see “Speech”. Next you will click on “Start Speaking”. You will then hear the word pronounced phonetically for you.
If you want to look up a word in the Chrome browser, you can right click on the word and you should see an option to see the word in the dictionary. Click on it and up will pop the dictionary app with the word.
Hope these tips help you out and maybe get you using the dictionary more on your Mac 🙂
