Since the iPad has arrived there have been many pieces written discussing the various uses for the device. Working with it, travelling with it or using it in place of a laptop.
Well now after owning one for a few months I feel like I’ve road tested it and thought I’d share three small points about the iPad that are somehow lacking but as you’ll see they probably won’t be fixed anytime soon.
There’s nothing quiet like sitting in a bath reading a book. If you’ve got the time and you’ve got the bath you’ll know what I mean. So how does the iPad translate to this situation? Well besides the obvious: don’t drop it in, there’s the fog problem. If you like your bath on the hot side and the outside ambient temperate is cold, you’re going to have a fog problem, there’s simply nothing you can do about it. The more you towel it dry the worse it gets, and sooner or later you’ll be out the finish the chapter.
It’s amazing for sure, you really do get 10+ hours of life out of a fully charged iPad, so how can this be a complaint. Well it doesn’t matter how long the battery will last, humans being what we are we will still manage to have it run out on us.
It happened to me just this week. Sitting by the pool, well into a novel that I was reading and yup the battery failed. You just don’t get that with a book.
Ok now this one really is a bit out there.
It’s 2010 right? Everyone’s using Wifi?
Well they are but while travelling there is still many a hotel that will offer Internet access only with a cable in your room. If you’re like me an you’re keen to just take along the iPad and nothing else you’re out in the cold. Or probably you’re in the lobby. Some hotels that have cable/ethernet access in the rooms will have Wifi in common areas, lobby, cafe etc… So if you’re travelling with the iPad, going solo, get used to sitting in the lobby in your bath robe – it’s a great look!
The answer, is yet to come.
So if you’re reading this and you’re one of the many companies that make iPad accessories you’ve got a new challenge. Come up with an accessory that keeps the screen from fogging up, makes the power last forever and connects to ethernet. I thinking of an all in one device here, wishful thinking?
I love the iPad and use it probably more than is healthy, don’t think of these as complaints but merely a tongue in cheek challenge to iPad accessory makers.
